"Poetry In Your Pocket --
and Lunchbox"
- BMCC News
At the very end of Poetry Month here at BMCC, William A. Wright, an Assistant Professor of English, took his creative writing students to P.S. 63 on the Lower East Side to recite and discuss their poems with a group of grade-school students.
"The Poems covered the gamut thematically, delving into subjects like cultural identity, being different, peer pressure, and the first stirrings of romantic feelings. The main emphasis on the BMCC students' writing was on finding the courage to be individuals so as to not blindly follow the crowd."
"As an instructor, I thought it was a great motivational tool for the students to write as well as a perfect opportunity for them to be mentors and role models for younger students," explains Wright. "I'm always looking for ways to make what the students write come from a place of real importance to them. I thought the idea of each writer trying to communicate with a younger person was perfected."
